Ingredients:
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions:
Activate Yeast:
In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Mix Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until a rough dough forms.
Knead Dough:
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–7 minutes.
First Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Shape Dough:
Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a lightly greased baking dish or loaf pan.
Second Rise:
Cover the dough and let it rise again for 30–40 minutes until slightly puffed.
Score and Bake:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Use a sharp knife to score the top of the dough with shallow slashes.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool:
Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
Decoration Tips:
Rustic Finish:
Before baking, dust the dough lightly with flour for a classic artisan look.
Festive Touch:
Use a stencil to sprinkle flour in holiday patterns, such as stars or snowflakes, before baking.
Serving Suggestion:
Serve warm with a drizzle of olive oil and fresh herbs for a delightful holiday appetizer.
Enjoy this crusty, flavorful bread as the centerpiece of your festive table!
