Henrik Andersson

Crispy Five-Spice Beef is a flavorful dish that combines crispy beef with the warm, aromatic flavors of Chinese five-spice. This dish is quick to make and perfect for serving over rice or with stir-fried vegetables, creating a meal that’s bursting with spice and crunch.

Ingredients:

Beef:

1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced into strips

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 cup cornstarch

1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder

Vegetable oil for frying

Five-Spice Sauce:

2 tbsp soy sauce

1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional, for depth of flavor)

2 tbsp brown sugar or honey

1 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup water

2 garlic cloves, minced

1-inch piece ginger, grated

1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water (for slurry)

Garnish:

Green onions, chopped

Toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Red chili slices (optional for extra heat)

Instructions:

Prepare the Beef:

In a bowl, season the beef strips with salt, pepper, and five-spice powder. Toss the beef with cornstarch until each piece is evenly coated for maximum crispiness.

Fry the Beef:

Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat.

Fry the beef strips in small batches for 3-4 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Make the Five-Spice Sauce:

In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), brown sugar (or honey), rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

Add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce thickens slightly, forming a glossy coating.

Coat the Beef:

In a clean skillet or wok, add the fried beef strips. Pour the five-spice sauce over the beef and toss to coat evenly.

Serve:

Garnish with chopped green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and red chili slices if desired. Serve hot over steamed rice or with stir-fried vegetables.

Tips:

Customize the spice level: Add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or fresh chili slices for extra heat.

For extra crunch: Double-fry the beef strips by returning them to the hot oil for a second quick fry.

Adjust sweetness and tang: Add more or less brown sugar and vinegar to balance the flavor according to your taste.

Enjoy this Crispy Five-Spice Beef for a deliciously spiced, crunchy, and satisfying meal
